Background of the Study
Language attitudes among youth are a critical factor in shaping future linguistic landscapes, particularly in Oshimili South. In this region, young people navigate a complex interplay of indigenous languages, pidgin, and the dominant official language, leading to evolving perceptions about language prestige and utility (Ibeh, 2023). These attitudes influence language use in educational settings, social media, and everyday communication, ultimately impacting the transmission of cultural heritage (Uche, 2024). The study explores how language attitudes among youth affect identity formation, social interactions, and career opportunities. It examines the factors that shape these attitudes, including family influence, educational policies, and exposure to global cultures, and assesses the implications for indigenous language preservation (Chinwe, 2025). The research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of youth language attitudes and to identify interventions that can promote a balanced approach to language use, fostering both modern competencies and the preservation of cultural identity.
Statement of the Problem
In Oshimili South, shifting language attitudes among youth have led to a decline in the use of indigenous languages, raising concerns about cultural continuity. The growing preference for dominant global languages over native tongues in education and social interactions poses challenges for the preservation of traditional linguistic practices. Despite these trends, there is limited research on how youth attitudes towards language are formed and their long-term implications for cultural identity. This study aims to bridge this gap by investigating the language attitudes of young people and their impact on indigenous language use (Chinwe, 2025).
